Our History

Swarnalaya AG was founded by Ramanavasan Poopalaratnam, who began training as a goldsmith in Jaffna, Sri Lanka in 1995 at the age of 20. He continued developing his craft through challenging times, driven by a commitment to skilled workmanship and jewellery with meaning.
After immigrating to Switzerland and rebuilding his life from the ground up, he opened Swarnalaya Jewellery as an Einzelfirma in 2021 in Basel. As the business grew, we moved to Clarastrasse 24 and established Swarnalaya AG, a reflection of years of persistence, hard work, and dedication to our craft.

We specialise in 22-carat gold jewellery making, offering both ready-to-purchase pieces and custom orders made to your design, occasion, and budget. Alongside gold, we also stock 925 sterling silver jewellery for everyday wear and gifting.
Beyond sales, we provide ongoing support through repairs, resizing, remodelling, and restoration, helping you maintain or transform jewellery you already own. We also offer laser engraving for personalised names, dates, and messages, as well as gold buying and selling with clear, professional service. For customers looking for traditional services, we provide nose and ear piercing in-store, and we can also arrange a gold melting ceremony for meaningful occasions.
